How Much Should I Give?

God calls us to generously return gifts that he gives us to help build his Kingdom, and to help each other.  We call this STEWARDSHIP.  Our parish is committed to the stewardship of time, talent and treasure.  This kind of sharing makes it possible for us to realize our mission as a parish community.

“…it is in giving that we receive…”
         The Prayer of St. Francis

"We cannot stand idly by, enjoying our riches and freedom if, in any place, the Lazarus of the 20th Century stands at our doors."

                                         Pope John Paul II

Who is a Christian disciple?

One who responds to Christ's call, follows Jesus, and shapes his or her life in imitation of Christ's.

Who is a Christian steward?

One who received God's gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.

Sharing the

of our Time - our Talents - our Treasure
is a lifelong & powerful experience
of what it means to be a disciple.

God Gave You It Is Time For:
  • The Environment
  • Taking Care of the Earth
  • Your Physical
    Body
  • Physical Fitness,
    Nutrition
  • Your Life
  • Time Management
  • Your Wealth
  • Money Management
  • Your Salvation

  • Sharing Your Faith With
    Others

Our Underlying Convictions
Regarding Total Stewardship:

  • Jesus invites us to follow His teaching.

  • Jesus taught, "Everything comes from the Father", God has entrusted to us.

  • Being a Steward is about who we are and whose we are.

Now Is The Time For Sharing the

Of Our "TIME" & "TALENTS"

Have you unpacked your suitcase containing TIME & TALENT?  Remember, the gate is narrow.  Anything left in the suitcase must be left behind.

If you truly believe that all we have comes from God, that all is gift; then even our Time and our Talents ultimately belong to God.  Do we prioritize our plans or do we plan our priorities?  When we become stewards of our Time and Talents, we begin to prioritize how we use our twenty-four hours a day.

In he Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14..) Jesus encourages us to faithfully use the talents that he has given and be prepared to return those talents with increase.

Sharing the of our Time and our Talents means that we have taken the time to discover that we have been "called and gifted" for a purpose; also, that we recognize our important role in building and maintaining the Community of Disciples at St. Justin, Martyr.

Now Is The Time For Sharing the

Of Our Treasure

St. Paul taught three things that sharing the of your Treasure should be:

Planned:

Pray about it.  Make sharing of your treasure a well thought out action.

Regular:

Be consistent with your giving.

Proportional:

In keeping with your income.

Well grounded in the Old Testament is the concept of Tithing.  "All tithes of the land, whether in grain from the fields or in fruit from the trees, belong to the Lord, as sacred to him."
(Leviticus 27:30)

The New Testament helps us understand All belongs to God and our sharing of our treasure comes out of a DISCIPLE'S desire to invest and extend the Kingdom of God.  Jesus encouraged giving in proportion to what we have received, praising the poor widow for her generous gift.  (Luke 21:2)

Tithing is a way of:

Loving:

Through giving , we show our love for God and humanity and offer thanksgiving for God's love.

Growing:

It is challenge that helps us develop self-discipline, responsibility and maturity.

Helping:|

Tithing supports programs to help those with material and spiritual needs.

"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.  (1 Peter 4:10)

Now Is The Time For Sharing Our

Of Treasure With The
Bishop's Annual Pastoral Appeal

Annually, each parish in the Diocese is invited to give a portion of their
to the Diocese to support countless ministries that the Bishop and his Pastoral Staff oversee.  When you give to BAPA, you are not giving to one charity but to many.  It is a good way of spreading our Catholic faith beyond the boundaries of St. Justin, Martyr.

After you have discerned the total of your tithe we recommend using the 50-40-10 method of distribution.

50% of your of Treasure
is given to your parish.
40% of your
of Treasure
is given to your other charities.
10% of your
of Treasure
goes to BAPA.

For instance:  If you Tithe a total of 10%, we recommend that you allocate 5% to St. Justin, Martyr, 4% to other charities and 1% to the Bishop's Annual Pastoral Appeal.

Tithing in Estate Planning:

Through your will or life insurance plan your estate can continue to provide support for your parish.

Teaching Tithing to Others:

Church members should teach their children to tithe, explain it to others and set good examples themselves.

  Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, take all my freedom, my memory, my understanding and my will.  All that I have and cherish you have given me.  I surrender it all to be guided by your will.  Your love and grace are wealth enough for me.  Give me these Lord Jesus and I ask for nothing more.  Amen.
(St. Ignatius Loyola)
